NEW! 2009 Quatsino Sound Fishing Derby Report

After a foggy start Saturday morning, clear skies prevailed for the 4th Annual Quatsino Sound Fishing Derby. The two-day event was a good opportunity for North Islanders to test their fishing skills plus have a quick visit to the historic community of Quatsino. A total of 85 Coho, 40 Spring and 34 misc. “Other” fish were weighed in. Although the top weight Halibut for the 2008 Derby was 101 lbs, not a single Halibut was entered this year.

Grand Prize Winners:
33.0 lb Spring – Mike Lind of Port Alice ($1,000.00)
18.6 lb Coho – Chevi Novak of Port Hardy ($ 250.00)
10.0 lb “Other” (Cod) – Kevin Doucette of Holberg ($ 250.00)

Second Prize Winners:
30.0 lb Spring – Cathie Moore of Port Hardy ($50.00)
14.6 lb Coho – Shane Murdock of Port Alice ($50.00)
8.4 lb “Other” (Lingcod) – Ken Smith of Port McNeill ($50.00)

13.4 lb Coho – Adam Dmetrichuk of Port McNeill

Over 100 prizes were awarded to Derby and Ticket Draws winners!

Derby organizers will be donating $313.00 (10% of profits) to the Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Resource Centre, the remainder will go towards the “Quatsino Museum Project”.

August 1 & 2, 2009 Weigh-ins at the Quatsino Government Wharf on Saturday, Noon to 9pm, and Sunday 10am to 1pm

The Quatsino Volunteer Fire Brigade will host a Lunch Concession on Saturday & Sunday.


Proceeds from this Derby will go to the “Quatsino Museum Project” and
 the “Salvation Army Lighthouse Resource Centre” in Port Hardy.
